Beckett Ridge (ZIP 45069) dates from the 1980s and 90s, and a great deal of composite has gone onto its decks since. Most people here already know a composite board has to be laid with an end gap, because the material moves lengthwise with temperature. What comes up far less often is that the guard is made of the same stuff.

A composite rail expands and contracts exactly as a board does, and a rail section is longer than most boards. On a warm afternoon a six-foot run of rail is measurably longer than it was at dawn, and the only places that movement can go are the brackets at each end.
