Wood Decks in Glendale, OH

Wood decks in Glendale, where the edge profile on the boards is chosen to suit an older house and to shed water. Timber is still the cheapest way to get a deck and the only way to get one that can be sanded back and made new again fifteen years later. A clean and a re-coat every two to three years is what keeps it there, and it is a job we come back and do, on lumber fastened with hardware that will not react with the treatment.

Wood decks in Glendale

A timber deck behind a Glendale (ZIP 45246) house stands in one of the most carefully kept villages in the country, and it is seen at close range from the garden. The detail that decides how the floor reads, before anybody notices the species, is the edge of the board.

Treated decking is stocked two ways. Radius-edge, which is the common 5/4 board with both top corners rounded over, and square-edge, which keeps a crisp arris. Radius edge is softer underfoot and on the eye, and it is what most suburban decks are built from. Square edge gives a tighter, more deliberate line that suits the porch and step stock on a period house, and cedar and hardwood are usually milled that way.

The two behave differently with water and with grit. A rounded arris sheds a drop off the corner and gives debris nowhere to lodge, so the gap stays clear with a brush. A square arris holds a bead of water along its length and takes longer to dry, so square-edge boards are laid with a slightly wider gap and get their edges sealed before they go down. On a shaded village lot with a canopy overhead, that gap is worth the extra eighth of an inch.

Sanding is the other half of it. A radius edge softens further with each pass of an orbital sander, and after two or three cycles the rounding is noticeably heavier, which on a period house starts to look suburban. A square edge sands back flat and keeps its line for the life of the boards. Where a household wants the crisp look and the easy drying both, the answer is square-edge stock with the arris eased by hand to about a sixteenth of an inch, which is enough to stop a splinter and too little to read as a rounded board.

What is included in wood decks in Glendale

There are three practical timber choices around here and they are not close substitutes. Pressure-treated southern yellow pine is the default: cheapest, strongest for its size, and the material almost every deck frame in the region is built from whatever is on top. Western red cedar is about a third lighter, naturally rot-resistant in the heartwood, and holds a stain beautifully. Tropical hardwoods like ipe and its relatives are dense enough to be genuinely difficult to work and last decades with almost nothing done to them.

Two things decide whether a timber deck stays flat, and both are settled before the lumber is delivered. The first is dry stock. Lumber comes off the treatment cycle saturated, and a board laid soaking shrinks, cups and checks as it dries in place, opening gaps and popping fasteners, so we buy kiln-dried-after-treatment where it is available and let the rest acclimate on site. The second is putting cedar where it performs. Cedar is soft, and boards over joists at 24 inches feel springy where pine does not, so it goes on the surface, the railings and the pergola rafters, over a treated pine frame.

Lumber picked board by board

Kiln-dried where we can get it, crowns sighted, laid bark-side up. It is the difference between a deck that stays flat and one that cups.

Fasteners that will not stain the wood

Hot-dip galvanized or stainless throughout. Cheap screws bleed black streaks down every board within a season and there is no fixing it after.

A finish schedule you actually get told

What goes on it and when, in writing, and we come back and do it. A clean and a re-coat every two to three years keeps a timber deck looking new.

When timber is the right choice for your Glendale house

Timber is the right answer more often than the composite industry suggests. These are the four situations where it clearly wins.

You are selling within five years

A new treated pine deck recovers a good share of its cost at resale and costs roughly half what composite does to build. On a house you are selling, it is the version of the job that puts the most back in your pocket.

The deck is large

The price gap between timber and composite scales with square footage. On a 200 square foot deck the difference is real but manageable; on a 700 square foot multi-level it is often the difference between building this year and not.

You want it to look like wood

Composite has got very good and it is still not timber at arm’s length. If the look matters more than the maintenance, on a cabin, a historic house, or a covered deck you will be looking at up close, cedar or hardwood is what you want.

The deck is already timber and structurally sound

Gray is a surface condition, not a structural one. A sound timber deck strips, sands and seals back to new, and that is a fraction of the cost of a rebuild, which is the whole argument for having built it in timber.

Worth knowing

When a new treated deck is ready to seal

Treated lumber arrives wet with treatment solution, and stain works by soaking in. Put stain on a wet board and it sits on top, never cures, and peels within a season. Sprinkle a few drops of water on it: if they bead up rather than soaking in, it is not ready.

Around here that is four weeks to several months, depending on when the deck went down and how much sun it gets. Anyone offering to seal a treated deck the week it is built is selling you a coat that will fail.

What hardwood is like to live with

Ipe and the other dense tropical hardwoods last longer than anything else we lay. Left alone they silver to an even gray and need nothing at all. Kept brown, a UV oil once a year holds the color, and that is on the list when we come back.

They are also heavy. A hardwood surface adds real dead load over pine, which on a marginal existing frame can push it past its span, so we size the frame for it from the start rather than meeting it as a late swap.

FAQ

Wood Decks in Glendale questions

What is the difference between radius-edge and square-edge decking?

Radius edge has both top corners rounded over. Square edge keeps a crisp corner, which suits an older house.

Which board edge sheds water better?

Radius edge. A rounded corner drops the water off, where a square one holds a bead along its length.

Can a deck have crisp square edges and still dry quickly?

Yes, with square-edge stock and the corner eased by hand to about a sixteenth of an inch.

Does the profile change the gap between boards?

Yes. Square-edge boards are laid with a slightly wider gap so they dry as quickly.

What happens after the deck is sanded a few times?

A radius edge grows rounder with every pass. A square edge sands flat and holds its line.

Does the village need to know which boards we use?

Not the profile. Glendale reviews the frame, and the drawing carries the joist spacing for the board thickness being laid on it.

We bring your vision to life

Most of our work starts as a sketch on a kitchen table. A door that opens onto a drop, a slope nobody wants to mow, a corner the sun ruins at four in the afternoon. We measure it, draw it, price it line by line, and build the deck you signed off on rather than the one that was easiest to frame.

Bulldog 6 step process

A deck that is still tight in fifteen years is not an accident of good lumber. It is the result of standards you can count on.

  1. Design & Layout

We measure up, then agree the size, the shape, the materials and where the steps go. You get a drawing and an itemized price before anything is ordered.

  2. Engineering & Permit

We draw the plans, get them stamped by an engineer where the county asks for it, submit them and pull the permit. Inspections are booked and the boards go on order.

  3. Demolition & Footings

The old deck leaves in a dumpster the same week. The utility locate goes in two working days before digging, the footings go below the frost line, and the holes are inspected before concrete.

  4. Framing & Flashing

We bolt the frame to the house and flash where the two meet, so rain runs off instead of into the wall. The county inspects it before any decking covers it.

  5. Decking & Railing

Boards go down with the right gaps, the railing is built to take a grown adult leaning on it, and every step is the same height. We sweep up daily.

  6. Inspection & Sign-Off

We walk the finished deck with you and fix your list before the final payment. That last pass is the Bulldog Finish, and the paperwork is yours to keep.
