Deck lighting in Evendale

Almost all deck lighting is atmosphere and it is worth having. An outdoor kitchen is the one part of a deck where atmosphere is not the requirement, and there are a good number of them on the larger properties in Evendale (ZIP 45241).

What changes is the job the light has to do. At a counter somebody is handling a knife, a hot lid and a full pan, and the surface they are working on sits between their hands and their eyes. Light from in front of them and above is close to useless, because their own head and shoulders drop a shadow onto the board at the moment they lean over it. It has to arrive from behind and to the side of where a person stands, low enough to get in under the counter overhang.

So the kitchen gets its own fittings and its own switch. A run under the upper edge of the counter, or under a shelf above it, throwing forward across the work surface, from both sides where the counter is deep. Brighter than the rest of the deck while it is on, and off once the cooking is done, so the deck drops back to the level everybody sitting down is enjoying. Two zones on one transformer, decided at the drawing.

Nothing goes directly over the grill. Anything mounted above a lid that opens is in the way of it and it is in the steam, so the light for that comes off the same side runs aimed across. The clearances around the appliances are already being set when the frame is drawn here, and the fittings get placed inside them at the same time.

What is included in deck lighting in Evendale

Almost all deck lighting is low voltage: a transformer steps 120 volts down to 12 or 15, and everything past that point is cable you can run without the constraints of a mains circuit. Run at build time, that cable sits inside the frame, drilled through joists, invisible and protected. Retrofitted, it gets stapled to the underside of the deck or run in surface trunking, where a lawnmower, a strimmer or an animal will eventually find it. The lights cost the same either way; the difference is entirely in when the cable goes in.

Two things separate lighting that looks designed from lighting that looks like a kit: color temperature and restraint. Warm light, around 2700K, reads as evening. Cooler light reads as a parking lot. Everybody goes inside when the light goes

The most common one and the easiest to fix. A deck with no lighting is usable until dusk; a deck with riser and post lighting is usable until you decide to go in.

People feel for the steps on the way down

That is the safety case rather than the atmosphere one. Riser lights remove it entirely and they are the first thing we would fit on any deck with a flight of stairs.

The porch light is the only thing on

A single bright fixture on the house throws hard shadows across the deck and dazzles anybody looking back at it. Several small low sources at deck level do the opposite.

A retrofit that was never protected. It works until a mower, a strimmer or an animal catches it, and we re-run it into conduit or through the frame as its own job.

Worth knowing

Where to put lights, and where not to

Risers first, because that is the safety case. Post caps next, because they mark the edge and let the eye read the shape of the deck. Under-rail strip along the seating side after that, aimed down at the floor rather than out at people.

What to avoid: anything aimed up or out at eye level, anything on the side of a post facing where people sit, and floodlighting the whole deck from the house. You want to see the deck, not be looked at by it.

What runs on low voltage, and what needs its own circuit

A low-voltage system is limited by the transformer and by voltage drop along the run, which is why the transformer is sized and sited before anything is ordered. Heavier cable, a split run or a centrally placed transformer are what keep the fitting at the far end of a big deck as bright as the one nearest the house.

What it will not run is anything needing mains: a ceiling fan on a covered deck, an outdoor kitchen, a hot tub. Those want a licensed electrician on a proper circuit, and the conduit should go in with the lighting cable.

Is task light just brighter light?

It is light from a different direction. The problem at a counter is your own shadow, and more light from the same place only makes a brighter shadow. Bringing it in from the sides and slightly behind is what clears the board.

Can it run off the same low-voltage system?
