Deck lighting in Pendleton, where the brick either side is what gets lit and the deck takes the light back off it. Deck lighting is the cheapest thing you can do to a deck that changes how much you use it. Stair riser lights are the part that matters. A flight of steps off a deck at night is the most likely place on the whole structure for somebody to fall. Everything else is atmosphere, and atmosphere is worth having.
Deck lighting in Pendleton
A Pendleton (ZIP 45202) yard is a slot. Brick on both sides, the house at one end, and often not much more width than the room behind it. For lighting that is close to ideal, and it is the reverse of how most decks have to be lit.
An open deck loses nearly everything it produces. Light leaves a fitting, crosses a lawn and never comes back, so the fittings have to sit close to what they are lighting and there have to be enough of them. In a slot nothing escapes. Two brick walls stand a few feet either side, and brick is matte with a warm color in it: it takes light and returns it in every direction, softened and slightly warmed, from well above the floor.
So the design turns outward. A low fitting at the deck edge grazing up the brick lights the whole yard off two large soft surfaces, with no lamp visible from anywhere on the deck. It is a better quality of light than anything aimed at the boards can make, because it arrives from a wide area and throws almost no shadow. The floor still gets riser lights on the flight and a run under the cap. The walls do the rest.
Nothing is fixed into either wall, which on a jointly owned party wall is settled long before a deck is drawn here. That takes nothing away from the lighting. Every fitting stands on the deck and points at the brick, so the wall does the work with none of our hardware in it.
What is included in deck lighting in Pendleton
Almost all deck lighting is low voltage: a transformer steps 120 volts down to 12 or 15, and everything past that point is cable you can run without the constraints of a mains circuit. Run at build time, that cable sits inside the frame, drilled through joists, invisible and protected. Retrofitted, it gets stapled to the underside of the deck or run in surface trunking, where a lawnmower, a string trimmer or an animal will eventually find it. The lights cost the same either way; the difference is entirely in when the cable goes in.
Two things separate lighting that looks designed from lighting that looks like a kit: color temperature and restraint. Warm light, around 2700K, reads as evening. Cooler light reads as a parking lot. A deck with lights in the risers, a few post caps and nothing else looks considered. A deck with every available fitting on it looks like a runway.

Everybody goes inside when the light goes
The most common one and the easiest to fix. A deck with no lighting is usable until dusk; a deck with riser and post lighting is usable until you decide to go in.
People feel for the steps on the way down
That is the safety case rather than the atmosphere one. Riser lights remove it entirely and they are the first thing we would fit on any deck with a flight of stairs.
The porch light is the only thing on
A single bright fixture on the house throws hard shadows across the deck and dazzles anybody looking back at it. Several small low sources at deck level do the opposite.
Cable is visible under the deck or clipped to a post
A retrofit that was never protected. It works until a mower, a string trimmer or an animal catches it, and we re-run it into conduit or through the frame as its own job.
Worth knowing
Where to put lights, and where not to
Risers first, because that is the safety case. Post caps next, because they mark the edge and let the eye read the shape of the deck. Under-rail strip along the seating side after that, aimed down at the floor rather than out at people.
What to avoid: anything aimed up or out at eye level, anything on the side of a post facing where people sit, and floodlighting the whole deck from the house. You want to see the deck, not be looked at by it.
What runs on low voltage, and what needs its own circuit
A low-voltage system is limited by the transformer and by voltage drop along the run, which is why the transformer is sized and sited before anything is ordered. Heavier cable, a split run or a centrally placed transformer are what keep the fitting at the far end of a big deck as bright as the one nearest the house.
What it will not run is anything needing mains: a ceiling fan on a covered deck, an outdoor kitchen, a hot tub. Those want a licensed electrician on a proper circuit, and the conduit should go in with the lighting cable.

Does the brick need cleaning or sealing first?
No. Grazing light shows texture, and on old brick that is the reason to do it. What we look at is the pointing on the lower courses, because that is the band the light picks out most, so we put a lamp on it at the estimate and you see what it will look like before anything is fixed.
Can a fitting be mounted on the party wall?
Nothing of ours goes into that wall. The fittings stand on the deck and aim at it, which is how the light gets made here anyway, so nothing is given up for it.
How many fittings does a yard this size take?
Fewer than an open lot, because very little is lost. Two or three grazing each wall, the risers on the flight and a run under the cap is usually the whole system on a slot this width.
Does painted brick work the same way?
A pale painted wall works better, because it returns more of what hits it. A dark one gives less back, so the fittings move closer in and run a little brighter. It gets established at the estimate by putting a light on the wall and looking at it.
We have a deck on the upper floor as well. How does that work?
The two levels get separate switched runs off one transformer. The upper deck lights its own floor and its stair. The lower one works off the brick, which is available to it at that height whether or not anything is above it.
Who has to approve the lighting?
Nobody, for the lighting itself. A lot of these buildings have a management company as well as the city, so where an exterior outlet is being added it goes to both. The lighting itself touches nothing shared, and saying so in one line is usually the whole of that second conversation.
