Villa Hills (ZIP 41017) has family houses with decks that open onto stairs down to a yard, and on a good number of them somebody has fitted a gate at the top. Usually it is a bought one screwed to the posts, and usually it is the part of the rail that has stopped working.

A gate is a moving part in a structure with none. It hangs off one post and latches to another, so both of those posts take a load nothing else on the rail sees, and every open and close works at the fixings. A retrofitted gate is hung on posts that were sized for a static guard, which is why they loosen.
